In recent years, a new generation of Indian hip hop artists have been drawing inspiration from global sounds — but Balaclava isn’t just another project chasing trends.

Gravity, Taunk Bawa, Yogi Vish and RORO draw from UK drill, street rap, and trap, but keep the sound rooted in their own identity.

The title itself, Balaclava, is a statement. In the drill scene, a balaclava isn’t just a mask. It’s anonymity, rebellion, and a symbol of street culture where the crew matters more than individual fame. By choosing this title, they’re tapping into that global language of underground rap — coded, raw, unapologetic.

The entire project carries that same energy. From menacing production to cold flows, the tape doesn’t waste time chasing mainstream hooks or radio-friendliness.

Instead, it leans into hard-hitting beats, aggressive deliveries, and a crew mentality where every artist holds their weight.

What makes Balaclava work is that no one is playing it safe. The chemistry between Gravity, Taunk Bawa, Yogi Vish and RORO is natural — each artist brings their own personality while still serving the larger sound of the project.

Desi Renaissance’s Top 5 Picks from Balaclava:

1. Phirrr

This one’s a proper Mumbai banger. You can easily picture people vibing to this on the streets — it has that raw city energy. The beat is one of the strongest on the tape, and Gravity delivers one of his best performances here.

His flow is razor-sharp, with Taunk and RORO matching that energy perfectly. This has all the ingredients of a street anthem, and it’s easy to see this track becoming a local favorite in Mumbai’s underground circles.

2. Backup

For me, Backup feels like one of the most complete tracks on the entire project. It’s got everything — a catchy hook, hard-hitting verses, and that classic hardcore energy.

Narak was the biggest surprise here. Honestly, I hadn’t heard any of his work before this, but his verse absolutely stands out. After this performance, I’ll definitely be checking out more of his catalog.

3. Cybertruck

Dropped as the first single back on March 21st, Cybertruck was the perfect introduction to the Balaclava sound. Everyone’s locked in — it’s hard to say who steals the show because each verse brings something to the table.

Whoever picked this as the lead single made the right call, as it sets the tone and represents the project’s energy perfectly.

4. DND

This track easily has the hardest hook on the mixtape. You can picture heads nodding and crowds going wild the moment the hook drops. RORO absolutely shines here, but the real standout might be the beat itself.

Yogi Vish has done an incredible job with the production — heavy, sharp, and infectious. If I had to pick one, this might be my favorite beat on the whole project.

5. Trolls

The production on Trolls brings a haunting, eerie vibe that instantly grabs attention.

Gravity delivers one of his best verses on the tape, riding the beat with precision and control that few can pull off. Taunk comes in just as hard, making this one of the more tightly executed tracks on the mixtape.

In summary:

Balaclava isn’t just a collection of songs — it’s a showcase of chemistry, where every artist plays their role to perfection.

Yogi Vish has crafted some of the most unique and hard-hitting beats to come out of the scene recently — every track feels carefully designed to fit the energy of the vocals.

What makes this project stand out even more is the contrast between the artists themselves.

Gravity and Taunk bring sharper, more aggressive vocal tones, while RORO’s delivery offers a completely different texture, creating a dynamic balance that keeps the tape sonically fresh from start to finish.

You can hear that the focus isn’t on outshining each other — it’s about elevating the project as a whole.

Balaclava is proof of what happens when artists come together to serve the music first — and in doing so, deliver some of the best bangers we’ve heard in a while.
